The Department was established in 2014 to meet the aspirations of the students of this region and also to train the students desirous of learning, understanding, teaching and practicing various aspects of Animal Sciences. Courses were designed to take care of both the classical and contemporary aspects of Zoology. Within a short span the department earned a name as an important Centre of studies in Animal Sciences. The hard work put in by the teachers and more so the students started yielding dividends right from the very beginning. One student from the fresh batch qualified CSIR-NET – JRF. The department has the expertise and infrastructure to help students opt for getting advanced training in many areas of specialization such as Animal Biotechnology, Animal Physiology, Ecology, Biodiversity Conversation, Taxonomy, Cytogenetics, Mycology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Toxicology, Parasitology, Entomology. With the help of grants received from various funding agencies (DBT, MoEFC & C, GBPIHED, UGC, etc.) the department is in a position to help the students unravel the intricacies of Animal life even at the molecular level.
The department has been receiving extra mural funding from the various national funding agencies. Research projects worth over Rs. 1.5 crores are running in the department. The department has completed some consultancy projects successfully. The department also houses museum focusing on the Animal diversity of the Pir Panjal and surrounding areas. Pir Panjal Biodiversity Park is the main attractions of the department. |
The department also offers Masters in Microbiology. Microbiology is one of the oldest and the most important discipline of Life Sciences as it deals with the study of microorganisms which have profound role in human health. Since studies on microbiology have both fundamental as well as applied aspect, BGSBU has introduced a 2-years course of Master of Science in Microbiology. The course curriculum is as per the Choice Based Credit System prescribed by UGC and covers the entire spectrum of microbial studies including bacteriology, virology, mycology and protozoology. It also covers applied microbiology as part of biotechnology along with specialized papers for Agricultural Microbiology and Medical Microbiology. Highly trained and qualified faculty members, with several years of teaching and research experience from reputed National and International Universities and Institutes, are teaching the course. Microbiology offers great potential of employment in production of pharmaceuticals,
medicine and diagnostics and Food and Beverages besides providing opportunities to continue in research pursuits or employment in teaching sector.
